February
2004 Approval Ratings Recap:
Of all elected officials tracked by SRI,
- New
York’s U.S. Senators Schumer and Clinton maintained the highest
approval ratings (60%); they were also they only ones to increase in
approval and decrease in disapproval.
- Congress
had the lowest approval rating (30%), followed by the State
Legislature (31%).
- President
Bush experienced the greatest drop in approval: down 9 pts to 35% -
his lowest ever.
- President
Bush also had the greatest rise in disapproval – 9 points – and
the highest disapproval rating (56%).
- The
President, Congress and the State Legislature all had disapproval
ratings higher than their approval ratings.

|
President Bush’s highest approval remains for
his handling of the war on terrorism – 51% - but it is down 8 points
from the previous month. Approval
continued to fall for his handling of Iraq – down 9 points to 35% - and
the economy –down 9 points to 28%.
At
the same time, a third of New Yorkers say the economy is moving in the
right direction, down 13 points from the previous month.
