The Siena New York Poll for May: Approval Ratings, U.S. Senators

 

Clinton’s Approval Reaches New High: up 3 points to 63%

Schumer’s Approval up 4 points to 63%

Loudonville, NY – Senator Clinton’s approval rose 3 points to 63%, and Senator Schumer’s approval rose 4 points to 63%, according to the latest Siena New York Poll from the Siena (College) Research Institute (SRI).

Senator Clinton’s overall approval ratings increased among most demographic groups.  The biggest jump in approval was among Democratsup 11 points to 86%, and among women – up 10 points to 69%.  Her only drop in approval was among men – down 5 points to 56%.

·         Her highest approval is among Democrats - 86%; her lowest is among Republicans - 37%.

·         Her disapproval rating went up 4 points to 27%.

 

Senator Schumer’s approval ratings also increased among most demographic groups.  His biggest jump in approval was among Republicans - up 8 points to 48%; New Yorkers age 55+ - also up 8 points to 73%; outside New York City - up 6 points to 60%, and among Democrats - up 5 points to 78%.  His only drop in approval was among younger New Yorkers - down 1 point to 56%.

·        His highest approval is among Democrats - 78%; his lowest is among Republicans – 48%.

·        His disapproval also remained the same at 18%.

 

Also in May:

·          Senator Clinton led Senator Schumer in New York City (70%-66%) and among Democrats (86%-78%), women (69%-63%), younger New Yorkers (63%-56%), lower income (67%-58%), and Independents and “other” party members (55%-54%).

·          Senator Schumer led Senator Clinton outside New York City (60%-56%) and among Republicans (48%-37%), men (63%-56%), older New Yorkers (73%-63%), and higher income (67%-61%).

 

“Both of New York’s U.S. Senators are in an enviable position,” notes Joe Caruso, SRI Director of Polling. “Not only do they enjoy the highest approval rating of any of the statewide elected officials SRI tracks, their current approvals are considerably higher than a year ago, and higher than their twelve-month and three year averages. At the same time, Senator Schumer has only a moderate disapproval, and Senator Clinton’s disapproval has lowered appreciably.”

 

This SRI survey was conducted during the month of May 2004 by random telephone calls to 620 New York State residents over the age of 18.  It has a margin of error of  + 3.9 percentage points.
