Clinton’s overall approval rating jumped 7 points in January to 59%, while
Senator Schumer’s approval remained at 56%, according to the latest Siena
New York Poll from the Siena (College) Research Institute (SRI).

Following a month of
falling approval, Senator Clinton’s approval ratings shot back in
January. Approval went up most
significantly outside New York City and among Independents and other party
members, higher income, women, those under 55, and outside New York City. Senator Clinton’s approval remains highest among Democrats (74%) and lowest among Republicans (32%). She is 1 point below her highest approval rating (Sept. 2003, 60%) since taking office in January 2001. Senator Clinton’s disapproval decreased 8
points to 28%. |

Senator
Schumer’s overall January approval remained steady at 56%. His
approval ratings were: up 3 points in New York City (to 60%) and down 3 points
outside New York City (to 52%); down 1 point among Democrats (to 63%) and
Republicans (to 47%), and up 2 points among Independents/other party members (to
53%); down 2 points among men (to 54%), and up 2 points among women (to 57%);
down 1 point among younger New
Yorkers (to 51%), and up 3% among older New Yorkers (to 66%); down 2 points
among lower income (to 54%) and no
change among higher income (57%).
Senator
Schumer’s approval rating is highest among older New Yorkers (66%), followed
by Democrats (63%); and lowest among Republicans (47%). Senator Schumer’s disapproval decreased 1 point to
19%.
Also
in January:
* Senator Clinton led Senator Schumer in overall
approval (59%-56%), in New York City (66%-60%), outside New York City (53%-52%),
among Democrats (74%-63%), Independents and other party members (58%-53%), women
(67%-57%), younger New Yorkers (59%-51%), and lower income (61%-54%).
* Senator Schumer led Senator Clinton among Republicans
(47%-32%), men (54%-51%), older New Yorkers (66%-59%), and higher income
(57%-56%)
“Senator Clinton made an impressive rebound in approval in January, and she’s made considerable improvement after three years in office,” notes Joe Caruso, SRI Director of Polling. “She’s just a point below her career high of 60% approval, and 3 points above her approval of a year ago. Her disapproval is down to 28%; it’s never been below 25%. Senator Schumer maintained a 56% approval in January, and is 6 points above his approval of a year ago. His 19% disapproval is consistent with his twelve month average. ”
This SRI survey was conducted during the month of January 2004 by random telephone calls to 620 New York State residents over the age of 18. It has a margin of error of + 3.9 percentage points.
