Job Approval Numbers Continue to Climb for Pataki and Bush

Schumer Holds Steady, But Clinton Suffers Decline

Loudonville, New York - President George W. Bush and Governor George Pataki continued to rack up record job approval ratings with New Yorkers last month according to the latest survey by the Siena College Research Institute (SRI).  Overall, the President scored an 82% level of satisfaction, while the Governor rose to 80%.  Meanwhile, Congress and the State Legislature each posted a one point increase, bringing their ratings to 77% and 48%, respectively.

“Once again, we’ve seen across the board approval increases for both President Bush and Governor Pataki,” said SRI Senior Analyst Bryan Jackson.  “In particular, the President’s handling of the terrorist attacks has gained him tremendous support among New Yorkers.  With 82% now saying he’s doing a good job, it marks a 43 point increase in his standing since July.”

Jackson noted that the President had done even better with Democrats in the Empire State, with his popularity surging 58 points since its low point with that group last June.  And, over the past month, the President saw a significant jump among residents of New York City -- 9 points -- to bring his satisfaction level with them to 77%.

Governor Pataki further solidified his approval numbers as well during October with an overall increase of 5 points.   His biggest boost -- 10 points --came from wealthier New Yorkers ($50K+) and from members of his own Republican Party -- up 9 points.

Meanwhile, overall approval inched upwards to 77% for Congress and 48% for the State Legislature.  For the Congress, the biggest increase -- 5 points -- came from Republicans.  For the State Legislature, the largest jumps were among older New Yorkers (up 5 points), and among older and wealthier New Yorkers (each up 4 points).

Changes were less favorable for New York’s two U.S. Senators.   Senior Senator Chuck Schumer remained at an overall 59% approval rating, while Hillary Clinton dropped 2 points to 54%.  Schumer’s biggest boost came from men -- up 6 points -- but was offset by an identical drop with women.  For Clinton, there were several substantial declines, most notably among New York City residents (down 7 points), older state residents (down 8 points), and among women (down 6 points).

“It would appear that Mrs. Clinton continues to be dogged by a base of disapproval that seems to range between a quarter and one third of all New Yorkers,” Jackson said.  “Meanwhile, Schumer is still struggling to get beyond the roughly 25% who continue to say they still don’t know enough about him.”

The SRI survey was conducted during the month of October by random telephone calls to 615 New York State residents over the age of 18.  It has a margin of error of +/-4.0 points.  For more information or comment, please contact SRI Senior Analyst Bryan Jackson at 518-783-2431 (SRI) or 518-581-8959 (home).  SRI surveys are also available on the Internet at: www.siena.edu/sri.
