New Yorkers Rally Support for Lawmakers in Wake of Terrorist Attacks

President & Congress Up Over 30 Points

Pataki & NYS Legislature Also Gain Double-Digit Increases

Loudonville, New York - Three out of four New Yorkers say they support the job President Bush, Congress and Governor Pataki are doing in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, according to the latest public opinion survey by the Siena College Research Institute (SRI).

For the President and Congress, the increases were pegged at 32 and 34 points, respectively.  Among state lawmakers, the Governor enjoyed a 17 point jump, while members of the New York Legislature saw their job satisfaction level go up 14 points, to 47% overall.  Meanwhile, the approval ratings for U.S. Senators Schumer and Clinton were placed at 59% and 56%, respectively, based on gains of 6 points and 2 points each.

Pre vs. Post Attack Approval Ratings

“Following the attacks of September 11th, no one gota better look than New Yorkers at watching theirleaders in action,” said SRI Analyst Bryan Jackson,“and they have clearly given them their overwhelming support.  Certainly, some of this   increase is a patriotic response -- but I think a lot of it is also driven by what was accomplished by these leaders during a very difficult time.”

In particular, the President and Congress  made tremendous strides with New Yorkers.  The President, who had gained 6 points during August, saw his job satisfaction jump another 32 points in September after the attacks, bringing his overall level of support to 77%.   His biggest gain -- 44 points -- came from Democrats, with 69% offering their support.  Three months earlier, only 16% said they liked the job he was doing.  For Congress, support by residents of the Empire State shot up 34 points after the attacks -- to 76% overall.  In August, the overall level of support had remained stagnant at 42%.

State lawmakers also saw their job approval numbers rise following September 11th.  The Governor, who had suffered a 2 point drop in August, found himself with a 17 point boost in September.   Across the board, the Governor enjoyed double-digit increases and approval numbers ranging from 72% among residents with “other” political affiliations, to 79% among Republicans and those over age 55.  For members of the State Legislature, the 7 point approval rebound they enjoyed in August gained an additional 14 points in September, providing an overall satisfaction rating of 47% in the latest SRI survey.

The SRI survey was conducted from September 12 through September 27th using random telephone calls to 605 New York State residents over the age of 18. It carries a margin of error of +/- 4.0 points.
